Passage from New Ross downstream is straightforward as fully lit buoys mark the commercial channel all the way. There is plenty of depth in the buoyed shipping channel but be aware of the direction of buoyage and rights of way in commercial traffic, especially in fast tides.

Leaving New Ross Port behind, listen to Ch 16, used by commercial shipping.  Annagh’s Castle,  once the ancestral seat of the Garvey family before they emigrated to Spain, appears on the west bank.  The river turns west past another commercial port at Stokestown.  As the river comes round to the south, the channel passes Pink Rock. 

Kennedy Homestead

On the east bank lies Dunganstown and the Kennedy Homestead, birthplace of the great grandfather of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, President of the U.S. (1960-1963).  The Centre celebrates the story of five generations of the Kennedy dynasty with a unique collection of memorabilia, an audio-Visual display, shop, picnic area and facilities.

The Barrow River provides a trouble-free, relaxing journey all the way to the Barrow Bridge with low banks and a wide channel all the way 

Kennedy Arboretum

High above, stands Slieve Coilte and the JFK Arboretum.  Dedicated to the memory of JFK, the Arboretum covers 252 hectares on the southern slopes and summit of Slieve Coillte.  The plant collection contains 4,500 types of trees and shrubs from all temperate regions of the world, planted in botanical sequence and the 200 forest plots are grouped by continent.  A road provides access to the summit at 271m and there are panoramic views over counties Wexford, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow and Tipperary. Other features include: rhododendrons, dwarf conifers, exhibitions, audio visual displays, lake, miniature railway, pony and trap, maze shop, tearoom and play area.

The 107m high chimneys at Great Island were opened in 1968 and produced 240 megawatts at full production.  The power plant is now being converted to gas.

Craft with high air-draft (> 6m mast HWS or 10m LWN) will need to request the Barrow bridge to be opened at least an hour before arrival.  The railway bridge swivels open with a separate arch for upstream and downstream traffic.   Railway bridge: +353 86 816 7826 –call at least an hour before arrival.  After passing under the Barrow Bridge, the Barrow and Nore join the River Suir in the Waterford Estuary.
